Case study · WordPress plugin

A WordPress plugin that keeps a venue’s program in step with Tuxedo

A performing arts venue in Quebec runs its program in the Tuxedo ticketing system. The plugin built by J3B Web imports it into the new WordPress site every hour, keeps the team’s edits and puts the data within the designer’s reach in Elementor.

The starting point

Shows, performances, halls and prices live in Tuxedo. The new site had to display them without entering anything twice, while letting the team rewrite a summary or change a photo.

The designer was building the pages in Elementor and needed the real data in the templates. The show pages also had to be well described for search engines.

What was built

  • Tuxedo sync

    • Nine kinds of data, from halls to the prices of each performance
    • Every hour from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a log of each run
    • What Tuxedo no longer sends is removed from the site
  • Protected edits

    • One lock per field, on 10 fields of a show, 6 of a performance and 5 of a hall
    • Locks on the detailed data and links received from Tuxedo too
    • Simplified menu and plugin dashboard for editors
  • Tickets

    • Sold out, Suspended, Postponed, Cancelled or free-text statuses, shown in place of the buy button
    • Separate buy buttons for the general public, subscribers and school groups
  • Editorial content

    • Series, selections and promotions, with a display period for promotions
    • Team, board of directors, photo albums and notes
    • Banners in 8 positions, with a display period and a carousel
  • Elementor

    • 67 dynamic tags
    • 5 widgets and 9 shortcodes
    • Category and hall filters with the Elementor Pro filter
  • Search and images

    • Title, description and social preview for each show page
    • Schema.org Event data for each upcoming performance
    • Search preview in the editor, with a character counter
    • Album photos converted to WebP when the show is saved, with the original kept

Three problems solved

  1. 01

An API that served frozen data

Changes made in Tuxedo never reached the site. J3B Web found the cause, a frozen copy of the data served by the API, and Tuxedo opened a dedicated API channel that serves current data.

  2. 02

    Times four hours off

Performance times showed four hours off, the gap between universal time and Quebec time in summer. The plugin now keeps every time in universal time and converts it only on input and on display. An 8 p.m. performance shows at 8 p.m., summer and winter.

  3. 03

    One show, several records

Tuxedo sometimes splits one show into several records with the same title. The plugin merges them, so the public sees a single page with all its dates.
