Case study · Platform and mobile API

The backend and API of Clexif, a social platform for content creators

On Clexif, content creators post, sell subscriptions, items and paid events, and receive virtual gifts. J3B Web built the API of the iOS and Android app, the website and the back office.

The starting point

Clexif replaces a first app. Its users were imported into the new platform.

In the old version, the link to a paid event could be passed around and opened without buying. Creators also had to be paid out safely, and the mobile app needed a stable, documented API.

What was built

  • For creators

    • Posts, subscriptions and a shop
    • Paid events and live video on the web
    • Virtual gifts received in real time
  • Payments

    • Creator payouts with Stripe Connect
    • Funds released after a 10-day hold
    • Stripe webhook signatures verified
  • Accounts

    • Sign in with Google and Apple
    • Two-factor authentication by email, on by default
    • Encrypted profile data
  • Mobile app

    • More than 190 API endpoints
    • Push notifications on iOS and Android with Firebase
    • Cross-posting to Instagram and TikTok
  • Media

    • Files stored on AWS S3
    • Video thumbnails made with FFmpeg
    • AI features with Replicate, whose signed webhooks are verified

Three problems solved

  1. 01

    Paid events closed to freeloaders

Each access to a paid event is now a unique token, valid during the event’s time window, limited to the number of seats bought and to two devices. Each opening is logged.

  2. 02

    Protected payouts

A creator’s funds are released 10 days after the sale, by a job that runs every hour. Withdrawal requests have limits: three attempts per hour, three pending requests at most, a $10 minimum, and a log for amounts over $10,000.

  3. 03

A documented API for the app

The mobile app talks to the server through more than 190 endpoints. The API is described in more than 9,000 lines of documentation, and accounts sign in with access tokens the server can revoke.
